Q&A
What does HP stand for?
The letters HP actually stand for the Houses of Parliament. The
initials were first added to the bottle - along with the picture of
the Palace of Westminster - after rumours that the sauce was served
to MPs in the restaurant.
When was HP Brown first produced?
HP Brown Sauce went into full production just as the 20th
Century was waking up. It was originally created by Nottingham
grocer FG Garton, who, paying off a debt, sold the recipe and the
name to Edward Samson Moore, owner of the Midland Vinegar Company,
for just £150. For more spicy facts from the History of HP Sauce
just drop into the Story section.
What are the main ingredients of HP Sauce?
Nothing but the finest quality ingredients sourced from around
the world make HP what it is. Sharp, musky Malt Vinegar, sweet
Molasses, rich Dates and some other exotic specialities are blended
together to a carefully guarded secret recipe. That's what
gives HP its uniquely distinctive flavour.
What are the best foods to eat HP sauce
with?
HP adds spicy fruity flavour to absolutely everything. Purists
love it with traditional favourites like bacon sarnies, all over a
full English breakfast, or with shepherds pie, or bangers and
mash. It's pretty marvellous on chips, jacket spuds and baked
beans too.
What other products does HP produce?
HP has put its name to a range of great Table Sauces designed to
tickle anyone's tastebuds. There's HP Fruity, the HP BBQ Range and,
for the more adventurous, HP Sauces of the World. Discover even
more here.
How many bottles of HP Sauce are sold per
year?
One in four of all UK households get through at least one bottle
of HP every single year. That's something like a total of 27.5m
bottles per annum.
Is HP suitable for Vegetarians, Vegans dietary
requirements?
HP Brown, Fruity and BBQ Classic sauces can be enjoyed by
vegetarians and vegans - on sarnies, chips and much more. For
further information on specific requirements please contact our
Consumer Careline. Have a look at Contact Us page for details.
Is HP Halal?

Where can you buy your sauces?

rather, what self respecting store doesn't stock it. For the
entire, glorious expanse of the complete HP range you might have to
explore your larger retail outlets. If you need any more help
finding HP products, simply contact our Consumer Careline.
